Prices are information only — not financial advice. Data: CoinPaprika / CoinGecko. A coin being big does not make it a good buy; most beginners should understand Bitcoin first before looking at anything else on this list.
The whole thing takes most people an afternoon, including the reading.
Bitcoin is digital money with a fixed supply — 21 million, ever — that no government or company controls. Its price moves a lot, sometimes violently. Never buy with money you can't afford to watch drop 30%.
Use a platform that's regulated in your country (see the country guides below). If it isn't accountable where you live, your money has no protection when something goes wrong — and things go wrong.
Regulated platforms take ordinary bank transfers — Interac e-Transfer in Canada, ACH in the US, SEPA in Europe, Faster Payments in the UK — usually free and fast. You'll verify your ID once; that's the law nearly everywhere, and a platform that skips it is a red flag.
Start with an amount that lets you sleep — $50 or $100. Learn how buying, selling, and sending feel while the stakes are tiny. You can always add later; you can't un-send a mistake.
Small amounts can stay on the platform. As it grows, your own wallet is safest — and the golden rule is: never share your seed phrase with anyone, ever. In most countries — Canada, the US, the UK and the EU included — selling or swapping crypto is a taxable event, like selling a stock. Keep your records.
One rule everywhere: buy on a platform regulated where you live. Canada is our home turf, so it's the detailed guide below — US, UK and European shortlists are rolling out the same way.
The same names keep winning on trust: Kraken and Coinbase in the US and UK, Kraken and Bitstamp across Europe. All regulated at home, all fine for a first buy. Full country guides are in the works.
